“gummy has a first single, a girlfriend, and one big regret”

A year into making music, gummy talks about his first drop, balancing school and life, and a December collab with pooterdabooter.

When and why did you start making music?

I started making music around a year ago. I started because when wifiskeleton died, I was active in his community, and they influenced me.

Why did you pick the name gummy, and what does it say about you?

Technically, I didn’t pick the name. My mother made it when I was about 6. She made my PlayStation name “Gum_Balls_7-11,” and I guess it just stuck with me.

“I hate that song so much. It’s only up because people like it.” gummy, on his first drop

Who or what shapes your sound the most?

Honestly, my friends and the music I see and listen to at the time.

What are you trying to say with your music?

I don’t really have good story-building yet, so most of my music is pretty bland to some. But I’ve gotten better, and most of it is about my girlfriend or something like that.

Why do you think people connect with your music?

I guess some people can just relate to it or think it sounds good.

Is there a song of yours that people like more than you do?

I hate my early music, so I’ll just talk about my song “all in my head,” my first drop on my gummy account. And OMG, I HATE THAT SONG SO MUCH. IT’S ONLY UP BECAUSE PEOPLE LIKE IT.

How would you describe your sound?

I don’t even know how to describe my own sound. I do a decent variety.

What’s been the hardest part of putting your music out there?

The hardest part of promoting, and any way of putting my music out there, is definitely having that quality and consistency while trying to balance it with school and life. And just reaching other people who would like it.

What’s next for you?

I do have some great projects in the works. I have a collab with pooterdabooter probably set to drop sometime around December, and maybe redize will hop on it.

What does a song look like for you, from first idea to finish?

Honestly, I just try to find a good beat and freestyle to find a flow. If I’m really proud of it or think I can hop on it, I’ll either write lyrics down for a base or just punch in. (I have gotten better at writing and lyrics, though.)

What’s the best part of making music?

I honestly don’t get a lot, but I would probably say it’s when my friends are watching me make music and they just pop in and say something random.

Why should someone who has never heard of you press play today?

I honestly just want you to give me a shot, and hopefully you’ll like it like I do.
