“blss and his abandoned building”
blss started out recording songs over free beats in a phone app back in 2020. After a few name changes, a three-month break, and a lot of support from friends, blss has built a sound that swings between sad and hype, pulled straight from real life with nothing faked. We talked about the betrayal behind the new single “okay.”, how a follow-back from bunii saved “long time” from staying unreleased, and why coding and fixing electronics are the go-to escape when life gets heavy.
When and why did you get into making music?
i’ve been making music since 2020 under different names, till i ended up with the name blss toward the end of 2023 moving into 2024. i started making music on my phone around 2019–2020 using an app called voloco. i’d use the free beats on there and one-take the whole song, because you couldn’t stop and punch in. the main reason i wanted to start was the creativity behind it. watching others and my favorite artists create something completely new from scratch, and how they felt in that moment making that song, is what really drew me in.
Why did you pick the name blss, and where did “blss” come from?
honestly, i was just looking for names that slid off the tongue and were clean. my friend imsg and i had just met at the time, and i wanted a cool, short name like his. i was thinking about how diamonds glisten, or how diamonds bliss, and i was like, “nah, that’s cool.” i started messing around with the word and got blssfyl, and eventually shortened it down to just blss.
“i just want people to know they aren’t the only ones going through it.”
Your newest solo song “okay.” What was going on when you made it?
i was just in my feelings because, at the time, my “friend” backstabbed me with my ex and started fucking her behind my back. i didn’t really know how to feel about it, i was already going through so much, and i wanted to put how i felt in the song.
How has making music changed you as a person?
i honestly think it’s changed me for the better, especially because of my friends. i’m forever grateful and thankful for them, and i don’t know what or who i would be without them.
How do you feel about the music scene around you right now?
i think a lot of the people making music in the scene are great and really talented! definitely unique compared to a lot of artists, and i love hearing new things i’ve never heard before. it does really suck when some people start making music as an attempt at a cash grab, though. it doesn’t feel genuine, and it especially doesn’t sound good.
What song do you know every word to that would surprise people?
i know every single word to “goofy goober rock” from the spongebob movie. i used to watch spongebob all the time when i was younger, and it just permanently stuck in my brain. my family always laughs when it randomly comes on, because me and my sister start screaming all the lyrics out loud.
What’s the story behind “live yr life”?
the whole thing behind “live yr life” is really just getting high and living your life with your boys, doing what YOU wanna do, yk?
What’s something about you that fans would be surprised to learn?
they might be surprised to know i actually do a lot of coding and building electronics in my free time. it’s kind of my escape when i don’t wanna make music or when i get stressed.
If your music were a place, what would it look like?
probably an abandoned building hangout spot: a couple of empty rooms with graffiti all over the walls, beat-up couches pushed together, and a speaker right in the middle. you end up feeling sad or hype listening to my music, so i feel it fits both.
What’s something you’re really good at that has nothing to do with music?
taking apart technology, fixing it, and putting it back together. i enjoy doing it and seeing the end result.
Have you ever taken a long break from music, and what brought you back?
yeah, there was one point where i took a break for like three months, because i started to feel lazy and didn’t want to do anything because of school, and i also had artist’s block. what really brought me back were my friends, to be honest. even just making a joke song with them helped me work on my craft and made me better as an artist.
What are you trying to say with your music?
i just want people to know they aren’t the only ones going through it. i’m putting my actual life out there, and i want my music to be that song for whatever people are feeling in their own lives. just chill and have a good time.
Is there a song you almost didn’t release?
it’s crazy to say, but it was “long time.” i didn’t really like my verse on it and wanted to change it, because i felt it didn’t match the song. the underground music page yorfled was begging me to release it, so i told him, “bet, let me finish some things and i’ll put it out.” then randomly, a couple days ago, bunii followed me back on instagram, so i shot my shot and asked if he wanted to hop on the song with me. he said yes, and that’s how the song came to be.
Why should someone who has never heard of you press play on your music today?
because it’s 100% real. i’m not faking a persona or trying to hop on a trend for a quick cash grab. it’s just me, cranking out songs based on how i feel. whether it’s a sad song or a hype one, you’ll surely feel it.
