aumay started making music in 2021 to get through heartbreak, but after stepping away for a few years, he returned with a more personal sound and a name that reflects a turning point in his life. From growing up feeling out of place to learning to embrace it, he talks finding himself through music, his brother’s influence, and why it’s okay to be sad but still have fun.
When and why did you start to make music
i started making music in early 2021 to get over my first serious breakup but i lowkey quit untill like 2023 cause my school found my music and made fun of me for the rest or the school year 😭
Where does the name aumay come from?
the name aumay has a bit of a double meaning i made the account late 2024 after going through another breakup and wanting to make music more personal to me so i decided to combine my first and last name and it also means april untill may because between those months is when i ended my relationship and went all in on music

honestly i think everyones weird in they own way you should be proud to be weird and unique ive been growing up in a very racist and homophobic town all my life but since i graduated i wear “being weird” with an honor just as everyone should

a thing people would never guess about me based off how i present my self is outside of this music shit i really don’t be doin nothing i deadass just wake up and make music and see my girlfriend

one of the earliest memories i have is this video from when i was like 4 performing baby by Justin Bieber in front of my entire family 😭
What’s the story behind “california (big brother)”?
the story behind california is one of my most personal ones. my eldest brother for as long as i can remember has been the blueprint for me from music to the music i listen to to even the way i act. he started college when i was barely one making it hard to see him but i was still able to now and then but around 4th grade he moved from middle of no where colorado to california to chase his dreams and with that he proved to me i should never be scared to chase after what i want. love him to death
What do you want listeners to take away from a project, not just a single song?
i want listeners to take away the fact that it’s okay to be sad but sometimes you just gotta have fun man. i feel like i showed this off well with my debut album true story
What’s on your playlist that would surprise people?
honestly i dont really do playlist anymore i always get super into one artist and just bump their spotify radio. right now ive been listening to hella pryme, glaive, and kesha those are my big 3 right now
What do you do when you need to reset?
whenever i need to reset i normally either just hangout with my girlfriend or talk to my family the both of them have been so supportive towards me and i owe them the world for it
What’s been the hardest stretch of your life so far, and what got you through it?
the hardest strech of my life was honestly freshman year to senior year. a lot of people say highschool was the best for them but that shit sucked for me. growing up in a bigoted town prevented me from being my self in fear of losing friends and being rejected but now that ive graduated its so much easier to just be me and also i just sucked at school i cant lie
What does success mean to you, beyond numbers or streams?
success to me is being able to provide for my parents, those i love and the fans. as for them i really wouldnt be shit lmao

a song ive been bumping hella lately is damage by my bro holdmetillicry hes so talented its crazy to me
If you performed tomorrow, what song would you open with?
if i were to perform tommorow the first song i would open up is me2. i wanna see people just jump and have fun and that song would set the tone instantly
How do you feel about the music scene around you right now?
i feel like the scene is the biggest its ever been but with that comes a lot of bad. to many cliques and bigger artist hating on smaller artist when we all human and should just make fuckin music. not to say ive never beefed before but its not hard to hop ina call and just be chill
What’s something about you that fans would be surprised to learn?
i feel like people would be suprised to know that originally i wanted to be a YouTuber until i picked up the music stuff i am so glad i found music though i wouldnt wanna do any thing else

i mean i have every emotion in one project. if you wanna dance i got songs for that, if you wanna cry i got songs for that, if you wanna act nonchalant i got music for that. anything that you could possibly fuck with i have a song for that
